Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB)
FPAB was established in 1953 under the dynamic leadership of Dr Humaira Sayeed the founding president of the Association. The Association is governed by a National Executive Committee consisting of 21 members.
As an affiliate of South Asian Region of IPPF, FPAB is the oldest and largest family planning and reproductive non-government organisation in Bangladesh, which pioneered family planning movement in the country. FPAB played an important role in formulating a national family planning programme introduced by the government in 1965 with the span of 52 years of its emergence. FPAB has made a significant achievement in creating awareness among the eligible couples about family planning and annually contributes 7% of the total national family planning performance.
Stepping towards a new strategic direction, FPAB has given special focus on the 5 A’s which stands for: Adolescent; Access; AIDS-HIV; Abortion and Advocacy.
In line with current strategic direction, FPAB has given more emphasis on meeting the SRH/R needs and increasing awareness on STI/HIV/AIDS of adolescents/young people.
FPAB has been implementing 21 projects of diverse nature and provided family planning and reproductive health services throughout the country.
In 1980, FPAB started implementing Sexual & Reproductive Health Education Programme for the adolescents and young people, which is now being implemented in 71 rural unions around the country. As the pioneer in sexual and reproductive health and rights education for the adolescents and young people in the country, FPAB is the only organisation to combine such education with life skills and community development training for adolescents and young people with the active participation of trained youth volunteers. The project aimed at improving sexual and reproductive health status, providing sexual and reproductive health information, education and counseling to the young people through formal and non-formal group approach by utilizing peer groups and mass media under the project title Sexual and Reproductive Health Education for Adolescents and Young People. The strategy of the project is to provide SRHR education for adolescents and young people through group approach and networking with organisations.
Currently a total number of 140 trained peer educators and 710 trained adolescents/youth leaders both male and female are involved in 71 rural unions where FPAB has been running the project.
