FPAM League to address youth problems

Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM) says it will strive to address sexual reproductive health (SRH) problems among the youth and empower girls with information for making informed choices through the 80,000 Women Football League launched by the organisation in conjunction with Central Region Women Football League (CRWFL).

FPAM's executive director Effie Perekamoyo said during the launch of the league at Lilongwe Community Centre that the best way to address sexual reproductive health problems affecting the youth was to offer youth friendly health services. "At Family Planning Association, we have young people as our primary audience. That is why we have set up programmes in Lilongwe and Dowa to address sexual reproductive health problems affecting young people. Some of the problems affecting young people cannot only be managed by health services in the usual setup.
We are aware that young people are a very good friend of recreation. It, therefore, takes a creative mind to think of using sports in addressing SRH issues of young people. Through this kind of sport, FPAM in conjunction with CRWFL will be addressing HIV and Aids, teenage or unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections and other issues," said Perekamoyo.

Perekamoyo also noted it was pleasing that a team of sex workers working with FPAM in the promotion of safer sex through a UNFPA funded project would be participating in the league. Both National Women Football League (Nawofle) vice president Diana Kadzayekha and general secretary Caroline Phiri pledged to work with FPAM towards the organisation's goals.
Principal Secretary for Sports Emmanuel Gondwe expressed government's appreciation of the gesture by FPAM. "With this sponsorship, the CRWFL will have an opportunity to develop the game of women football as the teams [in Lilongwe and Dowa] have something to do in their leisure time hence scaling down the rate of HIV and Aids," said Gondwe. As part of activities marking the launch, the commercial sex workers team played.
