The terms human rights-based approach and rights-based programming are commonly used in articles, on websites and at conferences by various individuals and organizations. Despite all the references to a rights-based approach, there remains a great deal of uncertainty about how to translate the concepts and ideas into action. At Youth Incentives we are committed to using a rights-based approach to guide our work, but based on our experiences we know that it can be challenging to make the link from principles to practice. In an effort to contribute to the dialogue on what it means to work from a rights-based framework, we have compiled information, tips and examples to help you gain a better understanding of what a right-based approach is and what it means for you as an individual and to your organization. Among other things, you will find:
• Background information on the emergence of a rights-based approach, including information about important international conferences and definitions of relevant terms
• Suggestions on where to start as an organization, along with tips for organizational assessment and developing rights-based programming
• Examples of how Youth Incentives is putting a rights-based approach into practice
• Ideas to help you and your organization move forward
We hope that you will explore the site and links, perhaps gaining ideas and inspiration along the way.
