Conventions

Some important highlights that are to be reviewed: 
- Convention against discrimination of and the violence against women (in 1981 and  in 1993).
- International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994 in which the individual's right to sexual well-being was central.
- Women Conference, Beijing in 1995 - the fourth women's conference in which all forms of violence against women and girls were discussed at various levels including equality, development, peace and the elimination of all forms of discrimination and violence.
- In 1998 a crucial step was taken -underpinned by law - to define rape, sexual slavery, forced sterilisation, and other forms of sexual violence as a war crime and a crime against humanity.
- In 2000 a resolution was adopted at the Security Council; Resolution 1325, on Women, Peace and Security, that emphasises the states' responsibilities to END violence and to protect any individual.
