Instituto Centroamericano de la Salud (ICAS) is working on an Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Programme in Nicaragua. The objective is to reduce unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections among poor adolescents in Managua, Chinandega and Rivas and to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS throughout the country. Peer educators go from door to door and give young people a voucher, which offers them a free consultation at a family planning clinic. ICAS aims to scale up the programme and transform it in order to improve the quality and access to reproductive health services in Managua. The programme will also be extended to other cities. Youth Incentives’ senior consultant Jeanette Slootbeek visited ICAS and gathered information from key stakeholders. Her report offers follow-up recommendations for reaching young people and involving them in the programme.
