Workshop in Nepal, December 2006

On the 12th to the 15th of  December 2006 two consultants of Youth Incentives facilitated a workshop on Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Kathmandu, Nepal. The workshop was held at Rural Women's Development and Unity Centre ( RUWDUC).

RUWDUC was established in April 1995 by a group of women for the Far Western development region of Nepal and has programmes targeting community women and youth. The organisation was established from the belief that appropriate motivation and training to women and youth groups could turn them into important catalysts and facilitators in the development of the communities and the region as a whole. At present RUWDUC's areas of focus have been based on the needs assessments conducted in the target population in the  field of general health based activities, women, children and youth based activities, education for the disadvantaged and income generating activities.

The objectives of the workshop were: to increase awareness of sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR) within RUWDUC and its network; to improve capacity of the participants on SRHR and to assess potential collaboration of young people and RUWDUC.

A total of 23 participants took part in the workshop. These came from various districts of Nepal and were composed of 8 male and 15 female participants, of whom 11 were urban and 12 rural. They all worked for and/volunteered at various organisations dealing with issues related to SRHR of young people and/or women.

This first collaboration between Youth Incentives and RUWDUC was experienced by both organisations as very useful as the need for work in the area of young people's SRHR, including acceptance of young people as sexual beings, and with an emphasis on Rights, is evident in Nepal.
